Tests on Friday Writing - This week is all about revising and bumping up their first drafts: Mon – Citing Sources Tues – Concluding Chapters Wed– Introduction and Transitions TH – Text Features Fri – Stories and Essays Books should be finished around Friday. We will edit and format next week. Math - Mon – 6.1 Sum of Fractions Tues – 6.2 Compare Fractions Wed– 6.3 Add Fractions TH – Fractions Activity Fri – Quick Quiz and 10 Marks Reading - Students will be taking a stance this week on if the colonists should go to war. Half the class will be Patriots and half the class will by Loyalists. They will come up with evidence to support their claim and we will have a debate at the end of the week. Science - We've been watching the moon for a week now and we've seen it gradually go from a New Moon to a First Quarter Moon. Students are going to make a Sway this week to teach others about the Sun, Moon and Earth.

To help us celebrate “March is Reading Month,” we would like to invite parents (and grandparents or other special relatives) to be our mystery guest readers beginning at 12:45pm or 2:45pm for about 10-15 minutes. We've had lots of illnesses throughout the building these past few weeks. We've been disinfecting at school and encouraging hand washing. Please encourage hand washing at home and keep illnesses at home if your child is sick. Here's what we're up to this week: Word Study: new lists will come home tomorrow, tests on Friday. Writing: We are coming up on the end of our first Revolutionary War draft. On Wednesday students will make a decision to continue working on writing about the topic they’ve been studying, or change topics to write about. Students have been researching using primary sources and secondary sources. They synthesize what they're learning from multiple sources. Soon they will 'become' a Patriot or a Loyalist and participate in a debate. We will reflect on February reading goals and set March reading goals after analyzing their own in-class reading logs. Science: We are coming to the end of our sun, moon, and Earth unit. We will finish up with observing the phases of the moon. A Moon Phase Calendar will come home March 1 and will be due back March 31. Please help remind your child to check for the moon each day and record what the moon looks like each day. We'll be talking about the moon here at school and there will be times that we'll hunt for the moon when it's visible during the school day. There's an app called Sky Guide: View Stars Night or Day ($2.99) that's very helpful with finding stars, comets, satellites, planets and our moon. Good afternoon! The chapter test will be Wednesday, March 1, so practice packets are due Wednesday, March 1. Reading - We are continuing to research about Revolutionary War topics. Writing - Students have been writing informational books about a topic they're an expert in. They've learned how to write using text structures that nonfiction texts follow: sequence, description, compare and contrast, and cause and effect. Next week students will publish these books including text features and key vocabulary words. Math - Students will review division, multi-step word problems, comparison problems and algebra. The quarter 2 assessment will be on Tuesday 1/24 and then students will finish up learning prime and composite numbers to wrap up Chapter 4. Reading - Today students began to research their extreme weather type. They will continue to research their selected weather type. They'll work on their presentation in Media. Students will also participate in a Severe Weather Poster Contest to inform others about severe weather for National Severe Weather week in April. Social Studies - We are moving on to the Southeast Region where students will explore the history, culture, geography and economy of the southeast. Science - Our next unit will be Magnetism, which will begin in February. We are back for our first (and only) full week in January! A volunteer calendar is coming home today for January and February. Students will need to know the states of the Northeast region. There will be a word box. Part of the student's scrapbook is a study guide for this map test. There's snow! :) As we are entering the snowy season, this is a friendly reminder that kids need their snow gear at school when there is snow on the ground. This includes boots, snow pants, coat, gloves and a hat! Check the forecast too! Sometimes there's not snow when kids come to school but it snows a few inches before recess and then some kids aren't able to play in the snow. I am sending Scholastic book orders home today.
