Thank you to the mystery readers we've had so far. The class asks me every day if a mystery reader is coming and they love to guess with the clues I give them. Sign up here if you're interested in being a mystery reader this month! Time for Kids booklets are accepted all this week! Here's what is coming up this week in class: Word Study - New lists this week - tests on Friday Writing - Students will start drafting their informational books this week about the Civil Rights movement. They've done some research about their chosen focused topic (Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, or the Little Rock Nine) and they'll work on writing with the purpose of teaching their audience about the topic. Their book will have 4 chapters each with a different structure. Chapter 1 is all about the Civil Rights Movement in general, Chapter 2 is all about their focused topic, Chapter 3 is a mini story that takes place during an event involving their focused topic, and Chapter 4 is a mini essay about the importance of their focused topic. This week students will draft their first two chapters. Math - This week students will review Mixed Numbers and learn how to multiply whole numbers and fractions (2 x 3/8 = 6/8). There will be homework on Wednesday and they will receive their study guide on Friday, due Tuesday next week. Reading - Students will begin their historical fiction book clubs on Wednesday this week. They've been working with their book clubs already to come up with some agreements for how their group will run smoothly. This unit is as much about talking about their reading as it is about the book and genre itself. Science - We'll continue the study of soil with a soil lab to identify and compare the components of different types of soil. Social Studies - This week students will wrap up the Southeast Region. The last event is to stop in Montgomery, Alabama and participate in a march for equal rights. They will have a southeast map test on Monday and their Southeast Scrapbook is also due Monday. Please check our calendar for additional events in March! Word Study - Tests Friday Writing - Preparing for Informational Books. Part of writing informational books is doing the research first. They will be working multiple sources which has unique challenges. Soon students will choose their topics and begin gathering information. Math - We started a new unit today - Fractions! Ask your child what a unit fraction is. This week we will be studying ways to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. There is a sheet of homework today and will likely be homework as well on Friday. Reading - The class is preparing for our historical fiction book clubs. We've been reading Sarah, Plain and Tall to help us get in the mindset of reading historical fiction. Soon students will be choosing books to read and enjoying the experience of reading in a book club. Social Studies - Today the class began the tour of the Southeast. As we go we are noticing the features that make the culture of the Southeast unique. Like the Northeast region there will be a scrapbook to document our travels. ;) Science - The class did a great job on their Sun, Moon and Earth tests. We will soon be studying soil and its features. |
