We're back! It was good to see everyone back at school today. The class is transitioning well back into the school routine. Word Study - New lists this week with tests on Friday Writing - This week the class is working together to write a letter to our congressmen about using the Metric System. Our next unit of study is informational texts. Students will do some research about some events or people during the civil rights movement and will write a short informational text about it. This unit involves reading, writing and social studies. Math - We are wrapping up measurement. Tomorrow your child will bring home a study guide, due Thursday. We will check the study guide at school and they will bring it home to review for their measurement test this Friday. The test will involve both metric and customary units of measuring length, volume and weight. Not all conversions need to be memorized, but students should know how many inches are in a foot, how many feet are in a yard, how many ounces are in a pound and how many pounds are in a ton. Students will have some tools to use for converting measurements in the metric system as well as customary capacity. Reading - Students will soon begin doing research for their informational writing. They will use what they've learned during our nonfiction unit of study to take organized notes about the events and people from our nation's history. Social Studies - The class did a great job synthesizing information from the northeast region! Our next region to study is the southeast region, which we will begin touring next week! This week students are comparing what life is like in an urban area with what life is like in a rural area. Science - The Sun, Moon and Earth test that was regularly scheduled for last Friday was postponed to tomorrow. Our next unit of study is soil, in which students will explore different properties of different varieties of soil found on earth.

Hello and happy Friday!
This Sunday is Lake Orion's night at the Piston's game. You can use the voucher your child received to get one free ticket to the game! Our Hearts are in Math – February is Math Month at Paint Creek. Your child received a Math Activity sheet last Friday. Please complete the activity sheet WITH your child and turn in a slip at the end of each week. Your child could have his/her name announced on the news show and win a small prize. On Tuesday the 4th grade will take the NAEP assessment. Make sure your child goes to bed at a decent hour the night before and has a good breakfast! Our Valentine's Day parties are on Friday the 13th at 1:50. We hope to see you there! Word Study - New lists will start on Monday, with tests on Friday. Writing - Students just finished their personal and persuasive essays. We celebrated with Mrs. Veeder's class and enjoyed some cupcakes! The students will be writing informational texts next which coincides with our next Social Studies region that we'll be 'traveling' to. Math - This week students learned about measuring using the metric system. They learned about meters, liters and grams and the prefixes that change the size of the unit, like kilo, milli, centi. Next week students will learn about the customary system of measuring length, capacity and weight. Reading - Students have researched a person or an animal and have taken some well organized notes on the topic. Today students began creating an e-poster using PowerPoint. Students will finish those presentations next week. We used OneDrive to save the PowerPoints, so students should be able to access their PowerPoints from home, if you're interested in checking it out, or if they'd like to work on it from home. Science - This week the class assisted in a demonstration of how we have seasons on earth. It's all about the tilt! We will review the sun, moon and earth next week and there will be a Sun, Moon and Earth test Friday, February 20. Students will bring home a study guide before mid-winter break. Social Studies - We wrapped up our train tour of the northeast region this week. Your child is bringing home their scrapbook of all our adventures along the way. This scrapbook is still a work in progress and should come back to school. They're bringing it home because they should study the location of the states in the northeast region. They will have a northeast state map test on Wednesday, February 11. It will be a blank map with a word bank where they need to label the states correctly, similar to the world map test they took last week. |
