Word Study
A Sample Week:
•Monday – Open Sort
–Students receive their list of words for the week. One copy goes in their word study binder, the other is taken home to study throughout the week.
•Tuesday – Closed Sort
–Groups meet to share how they sorted their words in the open sort. A pattern is taught to the small group (sound or pattern) and students practice sorting their words by the pattern taught.
–ODDBALLS! The English language is full of exceptions to the spelling rules!
•Wednesday – Closed Sort
–Students check their sorts and discuss what they found as they were sorting their words. A second pattern is taught and practiced.
•Thursday – Activity
–Check second closed sort, work with words in another way: Use in a sentence, ABC order, battleship, word operation, word hunts, book hunts, boggle, challenge words
•Friday – Test
