Happy Monday! This week is my last week with your 4th graders. I have had such an amazing experience with your students, and I am very sad to leave, but I know that they will do great things here at Paint Creek! They have a bright future ahead of them and I'm so happy that I could be a part of their 4th grade experience. As I've told them: this is not good bye, this is just see you later. I hope to come back and see how they've progressed later in the year! I want to thank you all for your kind words, your help, and allowing me to share in the joy that your children provide me each and every day. The Halloween party will take place this Friday, October 30th from 1:50-2:50pm starting with the parade. Weather permitting, the parade will take place outside. Please make sure we are not bringing any weapon props or any masks, and that our costume is school appropriate! I have copied the link from Mrs. Skellenger, who is planning our Halloween party. Please take a look and see what else we still need help with! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0a44a4a629aa8-4thgrade Our class is looking to do an experiment at the end of this week and we need pumpkins! If you would be willing to donate a medium sized pumpkins, we would greatly appreciate it! Word Study - New lists, there will be a test on Friday. Students should be bringing home their Word Study binders every Thursday night to study their words before their tests on Friday. Writing - We plan to celebrate all the hard work we've put into our Realistic Fiction stories. Our Author Celebration will be later in the week. The students have put a lot of work into their realistic fiction stories! We are also doing some creative Halloween themed writing this week to allow ourselves some creative freedom after all of our hard work. Math - We will still be working through our multiplication unit this week, but we will probably not complete it by the time I leave, so they will pick up with this next week with Mrs. Kaump. The unit test and quarter 1 assessment will take place early November. Tentatively they will take the Multiplication unit test next week and the Quarter 1 assessment (Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication) the week following. Reading - The class has learning about finding evidence in their stories for the theories they're growing about their characters. We have been reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, and we really enjoy it! Social Studies - We will wrap up Quarter 1 with our government test on Tuesday. Soon, we will be moving into Geography! Pictures this week will be coming soon. Stay tuned!

Please take a look and see what else we still need help with! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0a44a4a629aa8-4thgrade This week... Word Study - The class has been doing a great job studying their words. They've shared with each others ways they practice sorting their words at home. We'll continue to use different study methods in class. Tests will be Friday Writing - Students are wrapping up publication by proofreading their own typing as well as getting a friend to proofread. They're quickly learning about typos and how easily they can go unnoticed without taking the time to proofread. We'll be celebrating their Realistic Fiction stories later this week! Math - Students will continue learning about multiplying larger numbers and the different methods they could choose from. We have been working really hard with the area model. Some of us have even said it was fun! They will have homework sent home today! Reading - This class is doing really well with understanding characters. They've learned to put themselves in their character's shoes, visualize what their character would see and feel what their character would feel. This week they'll use these skills to make inferences and predictions, like, "What would I do in that situation? What do I think my character will do in this situation?" As your child is reading at home, ask them about their characters. What kinds of character traits do they have, and how do they know that. Science - We'll be wrapping up the energy unit this week. Your child will bring home a study guide this week and they will have an energy test early next week. Social Studies - We'll be wrapping up the second half of Government this week with a focus on the federal government. The class will be studying the Core Democratic Values as well as the Preamble to the Constitution which sets up how our government should work. We'll be wrapping up next week and having a test sometime next week. UPDATE: Study guide for national government test was sent home Thursday. It is due Monday! Their test is Tuesday. Enjoy some pictures from our game of Hot and Cold Particle Tag where were had fun learning about the transfer of heat!
Word Study - New Units this week, tests on Friday Writing - Students will be working to publish their realistic fiction stories this week. It's amazing to see how far their writing, and typing, has come from 3rd grade! Math - Unit 1 Math Tests went home at the end of last week. Your students did fantastic on our first unit! Students will continue learning about multiplying larger numbers and the different methods they could choose from in Unit 2. There will be Math homework on Wednesday this week. UPDATE: Math homework will be sent home on Thursday. Science - We'll be continuing our energy unit this week. We will be wrapping up with it soon and there will be an Energy Test next week sometime. Social Studies - We're wrapping up the State Government unit, but we'll continue learning about the federal government through the week. There will be a State Government test on Thursday. Your child brought home their study guide today. It is due Thursday. Please enjoy pictures from our solar cooker experiment last week! The Fund Run on Friday was a huge success! Our class had a great time running, even with the colder weather. Thank you for your donations! Don't forget, this week is SPIRIT WEEK! Monday is Matching Day, Tuesday is Career Day, Wednesday is Tye-Dye Day, Thursday is Inside-out Day, and Friday is Pajama Day! If you volunteered to be a chaperone on our Lansing field trip next week, and you did NOT get a note back from me about whether or not your name was drawn to be a chaperone, please email me ASAP. I just worry someone's slip is lost in a backpack or locker somewhere. We had 14 people volunteer to chaperone and we could only bring 10 along. The class and I are so excited for this field trip! Next Monday, a week from today, is our Lansing Field Trip. It looks like it is going to be nice that day! They can bring: a completely disposable lunch, a pencil, and a book to read on the bus. We'll be leaving school on Monday right after attendance, so make sure your child is at school on time. Chaperones can come down to the room first thing as well. As a reminder we won't be back to school until about 4:30 Fluency and Rocket Math begin this week. Each Monday your child will bring home a reading passage to practice reading aloud with good expression. Please encourage quality reading, not just fast reading. This paper should stay in their BEE folder so that we can practice at school and at home. On Friday you can take it out of their BEE folder. Rocket Math practice sheets will come home nightly. The practice sheet includes 40 math facts your child should complete. They do not need to be timed, but it shouldn't take them more than 2-5 minutes to complete. They turn this in each morning as they enter the room. Practicing math facts early in the year will make the longer math equations studied in 4th grade much less painful. Multiplication facts should be memorized and 4th graders should be advancing to division soon. Word Study: We're well on our way with studying words. Each week your child will sort by sound, pattern, meaning, or a combination of all 3. Monday: Students receive their word study lists and will complete an OPEN sort. Tuesday: Students learn a pattern that their list follows and will sort their word study words accordingly in a CLOSED sort Wednesday: Students complete another CLOSED sort or a BLIND sort or a SPEED sort Thursday: Students will review their pattern and play a game or complete an activity that reinforces using the spelling pattern. Students take home their word study binders to practice sorting. Friday: Students take their word study test. Writing: Students are writing scenes this week that follow the story maps they created last week. Students are working hard to develop character, setting and plot details by weaving together action, dialogue, thoughts and feelings. Their realistic fiction story ideas are really impressive so far. Ask your child about what their story is all about! Math: We are wrapping up the first unit in math. Study guides were sent home Friday and are due Tuesday this week. We will check the study guide Tuesday, and your child will bring it home Tuesday night. Their unit test will be Wednesday. Homework: Study guide due Tuesday, study for test on Wednesday Reading: We are wrapping up our first unit in reading which was all about developing quality reading habits. Students have been working hard to choose just right books for them and their reading stamina has grown tremendously. This week our focus is on sharing books we love with others. At home you could talk about some of your favorite books as a family or share with your child times where you and a friend have shared books that you liked. Science: We are beginning our unit on energy. The first form of energy we're studying is heat energy. Students will learn ways that heat energy is transferred and how insulators work. We will (hopefully) build solar cookers this week. I'm keeping my eye on the forecast, we just need a sunny day! Thank you for all your donations! Social Studies: Students have been studying how ideas become laws. They will learn more this week about the structure of our government at the local, state and national levels. Please enjoy pictures from our FUN(d) Run! |
