Good afternoon! Monday Folders will be costumed as Wednesday Folders this week. Happy Halloween! ;) The book fair will run November 3-November 11 which unfortunately does NOT line up with conferences this year. Our class will preview the book fair this Friday and make their wish lists and then they can shop during media Monday morning. Some kids/families have told me about upcoming vacations. Please email me with dates your child will be missing so that I can help with work that will be missed. Monday, November 14 will be a half day due to parent teacher conferences. Conferences are held Monday 11/14 and Wednesday 11/16. Check your conference time HERE. Food donations for Orion Oxford FISH will be collected through this Friday. 4th grade is asked to donate cream soup, evaporated milk and canned sweet potatoes. Lighthouse construction will begin FRIDAY! Check out our schedule HERE if you're interested in helping out. Kids will do the engineering themselves but will need help with tasks like cutting cardboard or hot gluing. Last week your child brought home a blue construction plan with a list of items they think they'll need to build their lighthouse. You can send in materials whenever you're ready! Thank you for your support! Please look below this post for some posts from guest bloggers about some current events that happened in our classroom! They would love to hear your comments! :) Here's what we're up to this week: Word Study: New lists today, tests Friday Writing: Students are working on publishing their lighthouse reports using Sway. They can view/edit these from home via their Office 365 account. Students have researched their lighthouse, focusing on the history, description, interesting facts and travel details for their chosen lighthouse. They will present this information with their model lighthouse to other classes. Math: Mon – Halloween Tues – 2.12 = 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication (area model) Wed – 2.13 = 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication (short cut) TH – 2.15 = 2 digit by 2 digit practice Fri – Fri – Quick Quiz & Chapter 2 Review Day 1 (test & packet due Wednesday) Please use 10 Marks, IXL, and Think Central for online practice. Information can be found on the front of their packet. Reading: We are wrapping up our first big unit in reading by focusing on theme. Students have learned that we can come up with theme of a book by thinking about more than just the characters actions. Students are considering the setting, author's craft and symbols as they determine what the theme of their books are. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our social studies unit about the peopling of the United States. Groups thought about what was at the heart of each group coming to America and learned what some contributions are from those groups that we have in our culture today. Science: On Halloween students engineered bridges made out of "bones." They found designs that were effective and ineffective and reflected on the experience. We will give this challenge a second try soon, as students are eager to try a different design. We will pick back up with science this week by reviewing circuits. Students will tinker with circuit materials on Thursday and then will begin lighthouse construction on Friday.

Hello! We have a wonderful week of learning ahead. The kids are very excited for Halloween! Our classroom party will be Monday afternoon at 1:50. The Halloween/costume guidelines can be found HERE. Volunteers - THANK YOU for all your help for September and October. Please let me know if you would like to keep your same day/time, OR what days/time you're available if you'd like to schedule something different. I will be putting together our November and December volunteer calendars this week! Lighthouses - Students have chosen their lighthouses and will begin construction NEXT Friday. You might want to start gathering materials at home (think: what goes in your recycling bin) that might be useful in constructing model lighthouse. A note will come home this week with more details. Construction will be done completely at school.
Here's what we're up to this week: Word Study - New lists, tests on Friday Writing - Lighthouse research and writing the pamphlet that will go with their model lighthouse. Math - Mon – 2.11 Story Problems Tues – Quick Quiz 2 with Big City Wed – 2.16 4 digit by 1 digit TH – 2.17 4 digit by 1 digit Fri – Quick Quiz 4 with packet catch up/games Please use 10 Marks, IXL, and Think Central for online practice. Information can be found on the front of their packet. Reading - Students will put together what they've learned to determine the theme of their books. They'll analyze things like character traits, mood, plot, setting details and patterns to come up with what the theme is. Science - We will review energy and heat energy Monday and Tuesday. The Energy test is Wednesday! Social Studies - Our next unit is The Peopling of the United States where we'll study 5 groups of people who came to America long ago for very different reasons. Students will also discover how things we value in our culture now (food, holidays, instruments) were "brought" here long ago from other countries. Good afternoon! I walked into our classroom this morning to find TWO trophies! Our class ran the highest number of laps at the Fund Run for Upper El and we had the single highest runner in Upper El which was Nick G with 20 laps! Our class also raised the most donations in envelopes. Students received a coupon for a free pizza from Hungry Howies! Thank you for everyone who attended our writer's celebration or donated supplies. The kids loved sharing their stories that they worked hard on over the past few weeks. Here's what we're up to this week! Word Study - New lists this week, tests on Friday Writing - Monday- Wednesday students are writing Halloween themed fiction stories. Thursday and Friday students will begin researching about a Michigan lighthouse. Information can be found on the front of their packet. Reading - This week students will debate about a character in their fiction reading book. They've learned the difference between a debatable topic and a non debatable topic and learned how to take a stance on the topic even if it's not necessarily what they agree with. Students will gather evidence from their books and come up with a counterclaim to something they anticipate their partner claiming. Science - This week we will be busy working on Types of Energy Flip Flap books and doing Energy Labs. We will see how animals stay warm in warm climates, we will see how energy transfers from one form to another and we will see how hot air/liquid rises and cool air/liquid sinks. Students will also build solar cookers this week, likely on Wednesday which looks the sunniest. THANK YOU to those who donated supplies for our solar cookers! To wrap up the week we will complete the energy study guide and students will take it home. The energy test will likely be Wednesday next week. Last week we were visited by Ms. Halli from the Orion Library, we had our Realistic Fiction Writing Celebration and we built towers out of spaghetti with some 3rd graders! Good afternoon!
We have many fun events this week, AND it's spirit week! Tuesday - Backward/Inside Out Day and a librarian from the Orion Library will come speak to 4th graders. Wednesday - Dress like your favorite President or First Lady and our Writer's Celebration is at 2:15! Thursday - Hat day and Engineering challenge with Mrs. Bronczyk's class Friday - Lake Orion spirit day and Mrs. Kaump is absent (out of state family wedding). They will find evidence in the text to try to convince the other of their position. Science - Heat energy and engineering challenge. We will be doing SOLAR COOKERS soon where we will cook smores using solar energy. For this experience, students will need a pizza box (smaller is better, but any pizza box will do!) Please send in a pizza box asap! Welcome to the 5th week of school!
Your child is bringing home a bunch of papers in their Monday folder today. Please review and send back tomorrow! Fund Run is Friday! I hope to see you there! Our class will run at 10:40 and our team color is blue! Last call for change and donation envelopes - send them in this week! We are still collecting Box Tops! Neatly cut Box Tops count for double credit for our class! Here's what we're up to this week! Word Study - New lists this week, tests on Friday Writing - Students will put finishing touches on their typed stories tomorrow and will do a final edit this week as well. Our first Writing Celebration will be next Wednesday, October 12 at 2:15. Parents are invited! More information to come soon! Math - The first math test of the year is on Wednesday. Practice packets and signed study guides are due Wednesday. Reading - We've been having glorious conversations about characters. I've been very impressed with the level of conversation our class has about books! We'll continue to grow theories about characters by noticing things that occur in the book again and again as well as objects that seem to be significant in the story. Social Studies - This week we'll wrap up geography. The geography test is Thursday, a study guide came home today (it does not need to be returned.) Science - We will continue science next week with our study of energy! |
