This Thursday is the holiday party. We still need volunteers, so check out the sign-up genius to help out at the party!
On Friday the class will have a read-in. They may wear pajamas and bring a favorite book or books and stuffed animal to read with. Word Study - This week the class is practicing 4th grade frequently misspelled words. We will work with the words all week and the class will be quizzed on them on Friday. The hope is that as these words come up in their writing, they will be spelled correctly the first time (before editing). Today they had a pretest to see which words they really need to study this week. They should have written the word correctly on their pretest, but here's the complete list of words: a lot, again, because, different, favorite, finally, it's, know, our, outside, really, said, sometimes, that's, their, there, they, they're, too, until, we're, went, were, when, where. *Students who got 0,1 or 2 words wrong on the pretest received the 5th grade frequently misspelled words list to study. Writing - This week students are building their essay by gathering different types of evidence. They will put together all the different parts into a draft before break. Math - Today the class checked their division study guide, they are bringing home their checked study guide today. We will review division Tuesday and Wednesday and the test will be Thursday morning. The next unit in math is about problem solving with different operations. Reading - The class has been learning about nonfiction texts and how they are different from fiction texts. This week they will compare and contrast different text structures in nonfiction. This unit will continue after break. Science - Tomorrow is the electricity and magnetism test. Our next unit, which we will start after break is Sun, Moon and Earth. Social Studies - The next social studies unit is all about the early history of our country. The class will learn how/why different groups of people came to America and how those groups' cultures shape our American culture.

They will organize their evidence and draft their essay near the end of the week. Math - The class has much to be proud of! I'm very impressed with how much faster students are able to complete long division questions. This week we're working on how to check our answers to make sure they're correct and applying division knowledge to story problems. Your child will receive a study guide on Thursday which is due back to school on Monday. They will have some time in class to work on it, but it will mostly be homework. We will check the study guide at school and it will come home Monday corrected. The division test will be Thursday, December 18 in the morning. Reading - Students are learning about nonfiction text features and how to approach reading non-fiction texts. They will find similarities and differences between fiction and non-fiction texts.
