Hello and Happy Friday! I wanted to touch base with you all before the weekend, so Monday's newsletter is here today! I don't typically assign homework over the weekend, but I did today. As always please let me know if there is an issue with getting it done, and I will accept it late. The homework is to finish page 73 in their math books. The class has really gotten the hang of multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers and the steps they take to do it the standard way. What's happening A LOT is that they are making small errors (switching the digits when they multiply, not carrying a number to the next column, etc) that makes their entire answer incorrect. If you can find the time to, it will help to watch them do it and catch when they make an error. If it helps, the answers to the first 9 problems on the page are: 2,072; 2,268; 5,301; 4,698; 2,356; 2,535; 1,118; 5,664; 3,922. A pink Volunteer Calendar came home today, so if you're interested in volunteering in November or December please send it back in with when you're available! The Halloween party will take place Friday 10:00-11:05 starting with the parade. The bus parking lot must be empty by 11:15. Students may wear their costumes to school. We will not have PE that day because it's our No PE day anyway. The class also requested we have a Read-In that day to celebrate the end of the quarter which I think is a great way to celebrate! :) They may bring a blanket or pillow or stuffed animal to read with on that day. Word Study - New lists, there will be a test on Friday Writing - Our Author Celebration will be Thursday at 2:00. Parents are welcome to attend and you can meet in our classroom. The students have put a lot of work into their realistic fiction stories! Math - We will wrap up our multiplication unit this week. The unit test and quarter 1 assessment will take place early November. Tentatively they will take the Multiplication unit test Friday Nov. 7 and the Quarter 1 assessment (Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication) the week following. Reading - The class has learning about finding evidence in their stories for the theories they're growing about their characters. Social Studies - We will wrap up Quarter 1 with our government test on Tuesday. The class will spend the rest of the week writing letters to our state representative about laws or changes they would like to see made in Michigan. Science - The class will learn about different types of circuits and the parts of a circuit. Have a great weekend and have fun at Trunk or Treat tonight!

Good evening! Our class had a great time on the Lansing Field Trip. Thank you to all our chaperones who were able to come along! This Thursday is Pink Out The School. Students are encouraged to wear as much pink as possible and donations will be accepted on behalf of Susan G. Koman For the Cure. Word Study - The class has been doing a great job studying their words. They've shared with each others ways they practice sorting their words at home. We'll continue to use different study methods in class. Tests will be Friday Writing - Students are wrapping up publication by proofreading their own typing as well as getting a friend to proofread. They're quickly learning about typos and how easily they can go unnoticed without taking the time to proofread. We'll be celebrating their Realistic Fiction stories later this week! UPDATE: We will be celebrating their stories NEXT THURSDAY 10/30. Math - Students learned the standard algorithm for multiplication on Friday (the method we all grew up with). Hooray! We'll expand their understanding of multiplication through working with larger numbers (3 and 4 digits) and also multiplying two multi-digit numbers, (like 2 digit by 2 digit or 2 digit by 3 digit). Homework came home today and there will be homework later this week as well. Reading - This class is doing really well with understanding characters. They've learned to put themselves in their character's shoes, visualize what their character would see and feel what their character would feel. This week they'll use these skills to make inferences and predictions, like, "What would I do in that situation? What do I think my character will do in this situation?" As your child is reading at home, ask them about their characters. What kinds of character traits do they have, and how do they know that. (My character Peter is jealous, because when his brother gets all the attention from his parents he gets really upset.) Science - The class is beginning our next unit of study: Electricity and Magnetism. That means they will soon be building lighthouses! You may want to start hanging onto good light house building materials (cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, cartons, oatmeal canisters). We could also use any empty baby food jars you may have at home. These make really good "lantern rooms" to go around their light. Social Studies - We'll be wrapping up the second half of Government this week with a focus on the federal government. The class has studied the Core Democratic Values as well as the Preamble to the Constitution which sets up how our government should work. We'll be reviewing this week and will have their federal government test on Friday. UPDATE: The government test will be NEXT TUESDAY 10/28 Happy Monday!
Tomorrow is our Lansing Field Trip. It looks like it is going to rain so please send your child with rain gear as there is some walking outside between the Capitol and the Hall of Justice. Keep in mind though that if they bring an umbrella they'll need to carry it around all day. Your child does not need a backpack tomorrow. They can bring: a completely disposable lunch, a pencil, a book to read on the bus, rain gear. We'll be leaving school tomorrow right after attendance to make sure your child is at school on time. Chaperones can come down to the room first thing as well. As a reminder we won't be back to school until about 4:30. The class had lots of fun making smores last week using the solar cookers that they built. They were delicious. Thanks again for the donations to that fun science project! Wednesday there is a Red Wings assembly, so your child is welcome to wear red or their Red Wings gear! Many of you have asked how you can support your student's learning at home, especially with math. Here is an important way you can do that: LearnZillion is a website that provides teachers and parents with video lessons showing what your student is learning each year. The lessons include a 3-5 minute long lesson video as well as other resources to download for practice. I've written some Quick Codes for the current math models we've been studying at school on the Math Resources page for Unit 2. Word Study - New Units this week, tests on Friday Writing - Students will be working to publish their realistic fiction stories this week. Math - Students will continue learning about multiplying larger numbers and the different methods they could choose from. Science - We'll be wrapping up the energy unit this week. Your child will bring home a study guide Wednesday and they will have an energy test Friday. Social Studies - We're wrapping up the State Government unit, but we'll continue learning about the federal government through the week. There will be a State Government test on Thursday. Your child brought home their study guide today. Our class won the bucket buddy competition for upper el! Today your child brought home a token for a free scoop, dish or cone from Culver's! If you volunteered to be a chaperone on our Lansing field trip next week, and you did NOT get a note back from me about whether or not your name was drawn to be a chaperone please email me ASAP. I just worry someone's slip is lost in a backpack or locker somewhere. We had 17 people volunteer to chaperone and we could only bring 10 along. Word Study: New lists this week! Writing: Students are revising, editing and publishing their realistic fiction stories. They are so good! Math: New unit starting this week, Multiplication! They'll begin by learning different models for multiplication. Today they reviewed Arrays and Area Models. There will be math homework Monday and Thursday this week. Reading: We are wrapping up their "Reading Life" unit with some strategies to share books. Students will be focusing on speaking and listening skills. Science: We will (hopefully) build solar cookers this week. I'm keeping my eye on the forecast, we just need a sunny day! Thank you for all your donations! To wrap up our energy unit we'll have energy labs all week in the classroom as well as working on their energy flip flap books to organize all they know about the different forms of energy. Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of government just in time to go to Lansing! We'll finish this unit with studying Core Democratic Values, citizens' rights and responsibilities and think about what would happen if we didn't have a government. There will be a government test mid next week. |
