Happy Monday! We are entering the 4th week of 4th grade! Wow! Were getting used to routines in 4th grade and starting to establish more routines as we go. Fluency and Rocket Math will start this week as well to help students practice their reading fluency and math fact fluency. Thank you to our volunteers for making these activities possible!
Here's what's coming up this week! Word Study: New lists should come home in BEE folders TODAY! Many students will also have an open sort to complete in their BEE folder as well. They had lots of time to complete this in the morning, but some did not. Word study is homework if it's unfinished each day because what we do in class the next day builds upon the previous day's work. Writing: Students are moving from drafting to revising this week. They'll revise leads and endings and add setting details to the scenes in their realistic fiction stories. Ifs possible your child might bring home their draft to finish writing on Wednesday this week. We'll begin typing on Thursday. Math: Mon – 1.9 Subtraction Tues – 1.10 – Subtraction Undoes Addition Wed – 1.12 Add and Subtract TH – 1.13 – Story Problems Fri – Quick Quiz 3 and Make a Store Each day we will have a “teach”, guided practice, and independent practice. Independent practice is from a packet. Worksheets are due the next day and count toward the standard. Quick Quizzes will come after each “Big Idea” (see the front of the practice packet). ***Packets are due on or before the test (October 5th) Reading: This week students will be naming character traits and supporting their ideas with examples from the text. They'll use their work with envisioning to support their theories. Social Studies: This week we're working with different kinds of maps. Their homework tonight is to read pg 21-24 (Sections 2.7-2.10) from their social studies book. They can find the book online at teachtci.com. The login information is teacher email: [email protected], username: first initial, last name, graduation year ckaump25 and the password is their ID number with the lowercase letters lo) They also brought home their book tonight just in case they can't find it online! This week students will review latitude and longitude. They'll use special purpose maps to find locations, and they'll be challenge to find out "where am I?" with a series of clues using different special purpose maps. There will be a geography quiz next week and a study guide will come home Friday. Science: Enjoy the pictures below from our Scientific Method unit!

Good afternoon!
Wow! We saw some amazing boats today! I hope you had fun with this project. We will test the boats tomorrow using the scientific method! Monday folders came home today. Please review your child's work with them and initial or sign next to September 19th. Folders come back to school on Tuesday! If you have not signed up for fall conferences yet, please do so HERE. The Fund Run kick off assembly was this afternoon. Our class already won $41.00 for our bucket, so technically we are in the LEAD with the most money raised for our bucket. The class is pumped up and eager to win the bucket competition. Fund Run packets are coming home today and Fund Run is October 7. Our first Scholastic Book Order is due September 28. Our class code is GXPRM Here's what we're up to this week: Word Study - Students received lists today of their classmate's names. We will NOT have a spelling test on their names on Friday, but students brought home a list to practice the routine of bringing home a spelling list on Mondays. We will sort their names and find spelling patterns in their names this week. "Real" spelling lists will start next week! Expect to see a spelling list come home every Monday! Writing - This week students will begin drafting their stories! Tomorrow the kids will plan their stories with a story map, or arc. Then they will draft the scenes of their realistic fiction stories using everything they know about quality writing. We will spend time developing the "heart" of their story so that the theme of their story is more evident. Math - Mon – 1.5 Comparing and rounding larger numbers Tues – Quick Quiz #1 Place Value, Comparing, and Rounding Wed – 1.7Adding Large Numbers TH – 1.8 Estimation Fri – Quick Quiz #2 Adding and Estimation Reading - Students will work on comprehension strategies to prepare for the work we'll do with character study. This week we'll review retelling, synthesizing, visualizing and note taking. Science - This week we will focus on science. Students will use the scientific method to test their boats. They'll communicate their findings with a graph. We will wrap up the scientific method study early next week and then our focus will shift to social studies as we finish up geography. Social Studies - After the scientific method unit we will continue geography. Students will use physical, political and specialty maps to find places around the United States. Good afternoon 4th grade families!
We've had a fantastic first week back at school. This is the most polite group of students! It's refreshing to hear 'please' and 'thank you' and 'you're welcome' all day! Wednesday is Curriculum Night. The session for my classroom will be at 7:00 in our room, room 302. This is where you will hear all the new and challenging things your child will be doing in 4th grade and ways our class will work. Childcare will be provided if needed! I hope to see you all here Wednesday evening! Here is what we'll be up to this week: Word Study: Word Study groups will begin next week. This week students will learn some of the routines for word study in our classroom. We will work with each others' names, finding patterns and sorting words to fit those patterns. Writing: We have begun our first unit which is writing realistic fiction. This week students will come up with ideas for stories and will start to develop their main character for their story. Math: Mrs. Veeder comes to our room for math! Each day we will have a “teach”, guided practice, and independent practice. Independent practice is from a packet and we check it that day and the next day. Worksheets are due the next day and count toward the standard. Quick Quizzes will come after each “Big Idea” (see the front of the practice packet). Today students received their first independent practice packet about the first chapter: Place Value. Reading: This is surely a class of readers! Students were eager to start reading on the first day of school! Our first unit, which we've started today is about understanding characters. We will reread a book they read in 3rd grade, The Tiger Rising, but reading more intensely, gathering details and evidence for theories we grow about the characters. Students will be asked to do the same work in their fiction books. Science: Today your child is bringing home a note about their first homework assignment! We will be conducting an experiment using the scientific method. To prepare for this experiment they are asked to construct a small boat at home. Please see the purple note for more information! Social Studies: The first unit we will be studying is geography. Students will learn map skills as well as different types of maps that can be used for different purposes. |
