Good afternoon! We've been spending lots of time outdoors, enjoying this beautiful weather while we can! Pennies for Patients is now running through April 29. Here's what we have in store for this week in the classroom! Word Study - New lists this week, tests on Friday Writing - Our next unit is Literary Essay. This week we will be reading short stories and analyzing the characters through writing to practice writing about books. Math - The class is doing very well working with equivalent fractions. They've learned about how to find equivalent fractions through multiplying and through dividing (simplifying). They will continue to work with equivalent fractions the rest of this week. There will be homework tomorrow, due Thursday. Reading - Book clubs are off to a great start. Today the clubs recorded themselves meeting and analyzed how well they worked together. They revised their book club constitutions to help their book clubs run more smoothly. We started Number the Stars today, and we will use this text and the book club books to learn about historical fiction. Science - Today students went outside to choose a rock. They learned 10 rules for finding a the right rock. :) They used what they've learned about characteristics of rocks to describe their rock through writing. Then we mixed up the rocks and the descriptions and students had to find another person's rock using just their description. This was quite a challenge for some rocks! On Thursday this week the students will simulate the rock cycle using crayons! If you'd like to help out please email me. We will begin about 2:00. Social Studies - Students will begin the tour of the Midwest region tomorrow. They will also learn about life as a cattle rancher in the Midwest. Good afternoon! It's so good to be back and see everyone's smiling (tanned) faces back at school.
This week is the start of the 4th quarter. Word Study - Tests on Friday. We're using the lists students received before Spring Break. I gave out new copies of lists this morning. Writing - We are finally wrapping up the Revolutionary War books and will celebrate on Friday with a short author's celebration. Math - We are starting our next unit which is Fractions and Decimals. Students were somewhat relieved to find that they already knew about fractions as we started this unit. There will be homework today due Thursday, and homework on Thursday due Monday. Reading - We are starting our next genre in reading which is Historical Fiction. Yesterday we read a short story, Blizzard and we are reading The Night Crossing this week. We will be reading Number the Stars together and students will read other historical fiction novels in book clubs. Groups will be responsible for setting their group norms and helping each other understand the text. Each group's first book takes place during pioneer days, which will get us ready for Pioneer Day in June. Science - Our focus in science is rocks. Students will learn about how rocks are formed, how they're classified and how geologists describe rocks. Next week on Thursday we will make sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks out of crayons. It would be nice to have some parent helpers Thursday afternoon to help with hot materials. Social Studies - Our focus will be shifted to science for the next couple weeks, but our next region we'll travel to is the good ole Midwest. We will find out about the economy, culture, and some landmarks in the Midwest Region. |
