Good Afternoon and happy Tuesday!
I hope you had a fantastic Memorial Day weekend. Mrs. Kaump is now on leave for the rest of the year, but the fantastic news that I have to share is that little Connor Kaump graced the world with his presence this past Sunday. He was born Sunday, May 24th, at 11:40am weighing in at 6lbs 15oz and 20.5 inches long. It was also a very happy day because Mr. and Mrs. Kaump were celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary on the same day. I have attached a few pictures so that you all can see how adorable he is! I would like to share a couple of things about myself now that I will be taking over for the rest of the year. My name is Chelsea Wekwert and I recently graduated from Central Michigan University in December of 2014 receiving my Bachelor of Science in Education. I did my student teaching here at Paint Creek with Mrs. Jaffe in her 3rd grade class, so I've been at PC for almost the entire school year! After I graduated, I returned to Paint Creek frequently to sub in classrooms throughout the school. During this time, I had the opportunity to sub for Mrs. Kaump and meet all of your wonderful 4th graders. They are a fun group of students and I am so excited to have the amazing opportunity to work with them for the rest of the school year. I know that these next couple weeks are going to be a blast! If you ever need to contact me, my email address is [email protected]. In other news! Our field trip to Moose Tree is tomorrow. We will be leaving in the morning and coming back just in time for lunch. We will be outdoors for this field trip so remember to dress for the weather and walking through the woods. This Friday, May 29th, is the End of Year Extravaganza. The study guide will be handed out on Friday and will be due Monday. We will also start reviewing all of Quarter 4 material in class before the Quarter 4 common assessment at the end of next week. There will be homework this week today, that is due Thursday, and the Study Guide on Friday. Reading - Today we discussed what makes a good book. We talked about the different genres your students are interested in and the books they would suggest to incoming 4th graders. Soon, we'll be starting poetry! Good afternoon!
Pioneer Day permission slips are due back to school by this Friday. If you are volunteering to chaperone or drive you'll need to have an ICHAT form on file at school. If you are driving you need to complete one driver form (there are 2 on the page that I sent home... just do half if you have one person in your family driving). To sign up for a station, check out the Pioneer Day Sign Up Genius. The class will be going to Moose Tree next Wednesday, May 27. They will be going in the morning and return before lunch. They will be outdoors so dress for the weather and for walking in the woods! My last day is this Friday, May 22. Ms. Wekwert will be teaching with me Thursday and Friday this week and then will be with the class for the remainder of the school year. Word Study - New lists this week - Tests Friday Writing - Students will be typing their literary essays this week and will celebrate next week! Math - We are into the Geometry unit and doing well. Students have learned about points, lines, line segments, rays and angles so far as well as how to measure angles. Up next students will learn about closed figures like triangles and quadrilaterals. There will be homework this week on Tuesday and Thursday. Reading - Students have been studying their characters and the themes of their stories as part of their literary essay work. They're finding evidence for their theories in the text. Science - We are into our rocks and minerals unit. Students will participate in a rocks and minerals lab tomorrow and will have a quiz on Friday. Social Studies - We began the tour of our last region, the west! We will travel quickly through this region finishing with Hawaii! We will have a Hawaiian Luau on Friday! Good afternoon! It was nice to see many family members today at our picnic!
Pioneer Day is coming up on June 8. Your child will bring home information and permission slips on Tuesday. A Sign-Up Genius has been set up if you'd like to choose your station to volunteer at. Remember all volunteers must have an ICHAT form on file which was given to you at the beginning of the year. An additional copy will come home with Pioneer Day information in case you didn't submit one at the beginning of the year, or a different family member is planning on volunteering at Pioneer Day. Tomorrow is the last day for M-Step Testing for 4th grade! Word Study - Students will receive new lists tomorrow. Tests will be Friday. Writing - To begin their independent literary essay, students chose a book and character that they remember well to grow some opinions about. They will work to support those opinions with reasons and evidence. Math - We've wrapped up our math unit on fractions. Tomorrow we will review concepts from this unit and the unit test will be Wednesday. The final unit of the school year is Geometry! Reading - To support writing instruction, students are using their time during reading to find quality evidence to support their essay thesis statement and reasons. They're learning how to angle that evidence so that it is most convincing to the reader. Science - Our unit on Rocks and the Earth's Surface has begun. Students will be comparing features of different rock types: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. Social Studies - Today students participated in a mini version of the Oklahoma Land Rush and learned why the state is the Sooner State. Students will wrap up scrapbooks tomorrow. Their scrapbooks are due Thursday and they will have their map and book tests on Thursday as well. Boy was I surprised when I came back from a meeting from Mrs. Smith to a surprise baby shower! The kids did a great job keeping the secret and were fantastic artists on the onesies they designed for the baby. Thank you so much to the party organizers. The kids had a great time playing the games and enjoying the delicious treats. It's a very special memory I have with a very special class. On a similar note, my last day at school will be Friday, May 22. Ms. Wekwert will be the long-term guest teacher until the end of the year. She's spent a lot of time with this class and is very excited to finish out the year with them. Please see the events calendar for what is coming up in the remainder of the year! M-Step - The class has done a great job with M-Step testing so far. We have 3 more days to complete. Wednesday, May 6 (Math), Monday, May 11 (Science) and Tuesday, May 12 (Science) all in the morning. If you'd like to donate a snack for the class, or even just some mints, the class appreciates having a little treat during testing days. Volunteer - The final volunteer sign-up went home today. There are many days blocked out for testing and special events. If you'd like to volunteer these last 2 months please fill out the calendar with your available dates and send back by Thursday. THANK YOU to our volunteers! Word Study - Word study lists will resume next week! Writing - This week students will work through the writing process quickly to re familiarize themselves with essay writing. The focus is on literary essays, where the topic has to do with a book or short story they've read. Next week students will begin to develop a literary essay about a character they've read about this year. They'll take a stand on that character's personality and support it with facts and details from what they've read. Math - This week we're finishing up fractions and decimals. Students have been using money to help relate fractions and decimals. Students will receive the Unit 7 study guide on Thursday. Reading - To support the literary essay unit, students have been analyzing their characters and finding similarities between characters across different books. They're finding that character traits can be shown in different ways; brave people can rescue animals from burning buildings or can stand up to the bully that picks on them. Science - We've wrapped up our soil unit. We've explored different soil types and characteristics including permeability. We've observed the different layers of soil and the make-up of the soil at each level. Students are also familiar with ways soil is formed. Students will bring home their soil study guide tomorrow and will have a soil test on Thursday. The next unit has to do with Rocks and Minerals. Social Studies - We've begun the tour of the Southeast region. We've found that the climate in the southeast is very different than here in the Midwest. The class really enjoyed Sciencepalooza on Friday!
