Today we got to measure Bitey's skin that he shed over the weekend and it was 4 feet 10 inches long! I will send home a February volunteer sign up calendar. I don't intend on changing the schedule around much, so just let me know what dates will work for you! We appreciate all the support we have each day! Quick event reminders:
Here's what we'll be up to this week! Word Study - This week is review due to the short week. We will be back to regular word study next week! Writing - We will have our essay writers celebration this week and start our next unit which is informational writing. Students will write an informational piece about our class topic which will be studied during reading. Math - We are wrapping up the final topics of unit 4 - factors, multiples and patterns. Students will receive a study guide Thursday and their Unit 4 test will be Tuesday 2/2. The study guide will ask for a study buddy signature, so whoever helps your child study can sign the study buddy sheet. Reading - Our next unit in reading is reading about historical nonfiction. We will focus on the Revolutionary War. Students will decide on what subtopic they will focus on for their informational writing piece and research that topic during reading. Science - Today we discussed what it means for an object to be magnetic. Students discovered that you can't always tell if an object will be magnetic just by looking at it. We will continue working with magnets this week! Social Studies - Students have been reading about 5 different culture groups that populated our country and the contributions they brought to our American culture. They organized this information into a flip flap book. We will also study world maps to see where these groups came from and the path they took to get to what is now the United States. There will be a World Map test on Thursday 2/4. Students will need to label the 7 continents and 4 oceans on a map.

Word Study - On short weeks we will review old lists and frequently misspelled words. Today we reviewed some homophones! No lists will come home this week or next. Writing - Students are publishing their persuasive essays this week! This essay was written more independently and with a more persuasive topic. We will celebrate their opinion writing accomplishments later this week! Math - Today we checked students' study guides and answered questions about the study guide. Students also used the back page of the study guide to go on Mega Math and review tricky concepts to them. The Quarter 2 Common Assessment will be Thursday! The test will cover division, algebra and word problems. Reading - Today students presented their research about extreme weather types. They worked hard to teach the class about the weather and use their visual aid as a resource rather than just reading from it. They did such a great job! Please enjoy pictures of their posters below! Science - This week we will review static and current electricity. A short quiz will take place Friday. We will move on to magnetism from there! Social Studies - Students will discover why different groups of people came and settled in America. Good afternoon! Recorder orders are due this Friday. Scholastic orders, if you'd like to order, are due Friday as well. Planning ahead, here is the sign up to volunteer or donate for the Valentine's Party. The party will be February 12 1:50-2:35 in the classroom. Word Study - New lists this week, tests on Friday Writing - Students are drafting their persuasive essays. They will type these when they're done! The students have shown a lot of independence with writing their essays on their own. Math - WOW! The class has been wrapping their heads around some tricky multi-step story problems and they've been persevering well. There is a math worksheet sent home today, due Wednesday. On Friday students will receive their study guide for Quarter 2. It will be due Tuesday. We will review Tuesday and Wednesday and the Quarter 2 test will be Thursday, January 21. The Quarter 2 Test includes the division unit as well as all the story problem work we've done so far with Unit 4. Reading - Research groups have been hard at work finding answers to the questions they have about their topic. They've learned about comparing sources and figuring out what to do if sources have conflicting information. They will create a small presentation in class about their weather type to teach others about that extreme weather. Science - We're exploring more about static electricity this week and we'll review current electricity later this week. After electricity is our magnet unit! Social studies is still on hold while we focus on science! Woo hoo! It's good to be back! The kids (finally) had some wonderful winter weather to play in today at recess! It was fun to hear about what you all did over break!
Monday folders will come home tomorrow! Word Study- We're back to our regular word study routine. You should expect to see lists coming home on Mondays and binders coming home on Thursdays. Writing - We celebrated the students' first essays before the break. They were very impressive! Not only were the essays well organized but they were entertaining as well! To wrap up our opinion writing unit the students will write one more essay that is persuasive. Math - Today we started the next unit in math which is all about Equations and Word Problems. Today we used variables to solve equations and the students thought way, way back to 3rd grade when they learned about the order of operations. There is one homework this week, coming home today and due Friday. It is a review of multiplication and division. Reading - The class will start a mini research project on an extreme weather type this week. They will use what they've learned about reading nonfiction to help them organize and synthesize the information they read. Social Studies - We will be focusing more on science in the afternoon for the next couple weeks, but our next unit in Social Studies will be the Peopling of the United States where the students will learn about why different groups of people came to the United States. Science - We will focus on static electricity this week and review current electricity next week. |
